The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection has plenty of younger siblings: Eagle Rare, Stagg Jr., and the entire Weller line. One of the lesser known little brothers, at 6 years old, is Sazerac Rye, the 18 year old version of which is one of the rarest annual releases in the entire Antique Collection (while the cask strength version is released as Thomas H. Seeing as the whole of the whiskey is rye, it’s sharp out of the bottle, but not problematically so. Born in Kentucky bourbon country, Ezra Brooks Straight Rye is a 45% ABV, 90-proof, honest-to-goodness rye whiskey—not a lot of fancy stuff goes into the distillation process. Its straight rye is Bottled-in-Bond, non-chill-filtered and springy as can be, but the most interesting part is the mashbill, made up of the classic 95 percent rye and a very rare 5 percent of malted rye. In fact, Ezra Brooks Straight Rye comes in at an impressive 95% rye, with only 5% barley. Neat, it is my favorite rye to date: smooth, complex, woody, spicy, grassy, with just a hint of the caramel vanilla sweetness you'd get from a good bourbon, all in a perfect proportion with no aspect that becomes harsh or objectionable.
